We are currently designing a large private home in the Oakland Hills. The home occupies an unusually shaped site with phenomenal views of the San Francisco Bay. Sitting on a “dog-leg” site, the home is organized with the main living spaces opening onto an outdoor courtyard. A covered walkway links the main house to an accessory building, helping to organize the rear portion of the site.

Occupying this second building are a two-car garage on the first floor and guest room on the second floor. Slung off the guest room is a double-height, loft-like space, which opens onto the backyard. The covered walkway helps to organize an outdoor parking court.

Still very early on in the project, there’s much more to come. Landscaping and the home’s relationship to the site will be a critical aspect of the project. Ultimately the “outdoor rooms” created by the landscape design will play as important a role in shaping the project as the indoor spaces.
